General Questions
What is paragliding?
Paragliding is a form of free-flight aviation where a pilot flies using a lightweight, foot-launched glider. Unlike skydiving, there is no jumping involved—pilots launch from a hill or mountain and glide using wind currents.
Do I need prior experience to learn paragliding?
No prior experience is needed! We offer beginner-friendly courses that start with ground handling and progress to your first solo flights under instructor supervision.
Is paragliding safe?
Paragliding can be very safe when done correctly, with proper training and equipment. Like any adventure sport, risks exist, but we follow strict safety protocols, use certified gear, and provide thorough instruction to minimize risks.
Training & Certification
How long does it take to learn to paraglide?
It depends on your goals:
• A tandem flight gives you a taste of flying with an instructor in one session.
• A beginner course (P1/P2 certification) typically takes 10-14 days, depending on weather and student progression.
• Advancing to a P3/P4 level takes more time and experience.
What certifications do you offer?
We train pilots under the United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (USHPA) system, offering:
• P1 (Beginner) – Basic skills, ground handling, and short flights.
• P2 (Novice) – Allows pilots to fly solo at most designated sites.
• P3 (Intermediate) & P4 (Advanced) – For experienced pilots seeking more challenging flying.
Do I need a license to paraglide?
Paragliding in the U.S. is not regulated by the FAA, but most flying sites require a USHPA rating for access. Some locations (especially those on public lands) may require a permit or membership.
Equipment & Gear
Do I need my own gear?
For training, we provide all necessary equipment, including a glider, harness, helmet, and radio. As you progress, we recommend purchasing your own gear, and we can help you select the right equipment.
How much does paragliding equipment cost?
A full beginner setup (glider, harness, helmet, reserve parachute) typically costs around $6,500. Used gear will be around $4,000.
Note: For our P-2 program price, it is required to purchase your equipment through AirXpansion Paragliding.
Flights & Weather
Where do you conduct lessons?
Lessons start at Emigrant Lake, Ashland Oregon. From there we move to various hills including Hornbrook, CA, Whaleback, CA, and Woodrat Mountain, OR. Based on the weather and the student's stage of progression.
What weather conditions are required?
Paragliding depends on wind speed, direction, and general atmospheric conditions. Ideal conditions are light winds (5–12 mph) with no rain. We monitor forecasts closely and may reschedule lessons if conditions are unsafe.
What should I wear for my lesson?
Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy hiking boots or running shoes, and long pants. We recommend dressing in layers. Sunscreen recommended.
